Just last week, I heard my mentee saying “nowadays, it’s so hard to be myself”.
In a world where conformity often seems like the path of least resistance, the journey to being yourself can feel like a daunting one. It takes a lot of courage! As someone who has spent more than three decades navigating the intricate realms of leadership, I’ve come to understand that authenticity is not just a virtue; it’s the cornerstone of true success and fulfillment.
My professor always reminded me that the first step in my working life is self-awareness. Take the time to understand who you are at your core – your values, beliefs, strengths, and weaknesses. Embrace your uniqueness, because you are special, and it is what makes you extraordinary. Remember, authenticity isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being genuine.
Courage is a value, so cultivate the courage to stay true to yourself, even when faced with adversity. It’s easy to succumb to societal pressures or the expectations of others, especially when working in a corporate world. I admire true leaders who forged their own paths. Trust in your instincts and have the confidence to stand by your convictions, even if it means going against the grain. I know, because I have not been liked by many as well.
Authenticity also requires vulnerability. Don’t be afraid to show your true emotions or admit your mistakes. It takes a growth-minded leader to accept you as you are and vice versa. It’s through our imperfections that we connect with others on a deeper level. Authentic leaders inspire trust and loyalty because they are real – they’re not afraid to let their humanity shine through.
Surround yourself with people who support and celebrate your authenticity. Seek out mentors who lead by example and embody the values you hold dear. Build a network of peers who appreciate you for who you are and encourage you to be the best version of yourself.
Although, I am driving in the slower lane now, I remember that being yourself is an ongoing journey, not a destination. My advice is to stay open to growth and continue to evolve as a person and a leader. Embrace new experiences, learn from your failures, and never stop striving to become the most authentic version of yourself.
In a world that often demands conformity, being yourself is a revolutionary act. But it’s also the key to unlocking your true potential and living a life of meaning and purpose. So, dare to be different, dare to be bold, and above all, dare to be yourself.
Of course, this time, my professor said “If only he knew”. 😊
