Values: What makes you jump out of bed every morning?

My professor (and mentor) used to ask me this question whenever he noticed that I was dragging my feet on an assignment at work. His question usually helped me to check in on myself.

Which one of these answers below would you rank the most important?

  1. Meaningful Work: Employees are motivated when they feel their work has a meaningful impact on something greater than themselves. Knowing that their efforts contribute to a larger purpose or mission can inspire them to jump out of bed eagerly each morning.
  2. Opportunities for Growth and Development: Employees who have opportunities to learn new skills, develop professionally, and advance in their careers are more likely to feel motivated and engaged. Providing training, mentorship, and opportunities for advancement can fuel their excitement for the work they do.
  3. Recognition and Appreciation: Acknowledging and celebrating employees’ achievements and contributions is essential for maintaining motivation. When employees feel recognized and appreciated for their hard work, they are more likely to be motivated to continue performing at their best.

If you said all three, then you would be sharing the same values as me.

I like to do meaningful work, but how often do we feel that our work has a meaningful impact directly on ourselves and on those around us? This is wishful thinking as I believe that truly meaningful work extends beyond individual fulfillment to positively impact others and the world around us. It’s about finding a balance between personal growth and contributing to something greater than oneself. Having fun while working matters.

Meaningful work is indeed a powerful motivator. However, it’s not the sole factor that drives us to leap out of bed each morning. The pursuit of personal growth and development is equally vital. The opportunity to learn, evolve, and progress in our careers fuels our enthusiasm and drive. It’s about continuously striving to better ourselves, both personally and professionally. We need to end each day with new skills and be a little wiser with experience.

I know recognition and appreciation play a crucial role in sustaining motivation. Feeling valued and acknowledged for our contributions validates our efforts and inspires us to keep pushing forward. It’s the fuel that ignites our passion and commitment to excel in what we do. That’s what we all need to feed our working soul.

In essence, all three factors—meaningful work, opportunities for growth, and recognition—are interconnected and essential for fostering a fulfilling work environment. They form the foundation of a culture where individuals thrive, collectively driving towards shared goals and aspirations.

Reflecting on my own journey, I realize that these values resonate deeply with me. They serve as guiding principles that shape my approach to work and life. If only I knew earlier in my career how integral these values would be in shaping my sense of purpose and fulfillment.

As leaders and professionals, let’s navigate the complexities of the modern workplace, and remember the importance of meaningful work, opportunities for growth, and recognition. Do be mindful at work and strive to cultivate environments where these values flourish, empowering individuals to thrive and make a meaningful impact. If only I knew then what I know now, perhaps I would have embraced these values more wholeheartedly from the start. My professor usually asked profound questions that I have learned to ask the same to my mentees.

If only I knew. 😊

Along the way, I make failure my friend.

Learning one day at a time, as long as I can fail forward, fail faster and fail better.

I hope to inspire Videopedians with my professors’ stories and that we will be able to share life experiences as friends even if we don’t get to meet each other during our journey on earth.
