Values: Navigating Life’s Crossroads

Life is a journey filled with crossroads, each offering us the chance to make choices that define who we are and what we stand for. At the beginning of this year, I found myself at a significant intersection, facing a decision that forced me to reflect on my core values.

Our values determined our decision.

It was on a sunny and warm morning several months ago, and I was about to jump out of bed as usual, thinking of what I have to share with my colleagues during the daily morning standup. As I sat on my throne (just like any human being would every morning), I debated with myself about staying on my job. It was a dream job for many, and the prospect of financial stability and great colleagues were obviously tempting. However, deep down, I knew something didn’t feel right. Somehow, I need to make a decision based on my core values or maybe my up-line will help me make that decision for me 😊. Well, my value on fitness (health) finally won me over and the decision was made. It was time to look after myself and not chase the next shining object.

Growing up, I was instilled with values consisting of the seven “F”s – Family, Friends, Financial Freedom, Fitness, Faith, Filial Piety, and it’s important that we encompass it all with the Fun element.

Most of us have a deep sense of Family values instilled in us. Then as we began going to school, we value our Friends. They, too, become part of our lives and we made our decisions based on the friends we hang out with. Before long, we find ourselves graduating and job hunting. I had always envisioned a career where I could make a positive impact on the world. For many, Financial Freedom values offered us comfort and security.

In my heart, I knew I had to make a choice based on my values. I turned down lucrative job offers and instead chose to stay with a company with a purpose to be essential. It wasn’t an easy decision for me as I reached my forty years in the company. I faced skepticism from family and friends who couldn’t understand why it was time to enjoy my hard work, not knowing that at this crossroad my core value on fitness matters.

Over the years, as I dedicated myself to a corporate life, I witnessed the real impact I made. I found myself with great mentors and sparring with smart colleagues. The fulfillment was far more rewarding than any pay check could be. My choice to prioritize values over convenience had a profound impact on my life and the lives of others.

It was only in my college years that my professor taught me that our values are our compass in life. When we make decisions in alignment with our principles, we not only find purpose and fulfillment but also create a positive impact on the world around us. It’s a reminder that the road less traveled, guided by our values, often leads to the most remarkable adventures and life satisfaction.

In conclusion, our choices define us, and choosing values over convenience is a brave decision that can lead to a life filled with meaning and purpose. As I continue my journey, I remain grateful for the lessons I learned on that warm graduation day, proving that decisions based on our core values are never the wrong path to take.
